(1.28.08) Sleep to Your Health With Perfect Day® By Serta
Hoffman Estates, Ill. – Jan. 28, 2008 – Today’s consumers are growing increasingly health-conscious, seeking visible benefits to their health and well being in everything from the foods they eat to the clothes they wear. It’s widely accepted that better sleep leads to better health, yet between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from sleeping problems and it’s costing them. Health experts estimate the annual healthcare bill attributed to sleep problems is at least $16 billion. Considering that people spend roughly a third of their lives in bed, one place they should also be looking is in their mattress. In 2005, Serta launched its high end Perfect Day mattress collection, designed to give today’s busy and health-conscious consumers the quality of sleep they need to feel their best all day, every day. Now, Serta is unveiling its new and improved 2008 Perfect Day collection with more advanced and creative technologies to address today’s most common sleep and health complaints.“Here at Serta, we believe one of the best things people can do for better health is to get better sleep,” said Bob Sherman, president of Serta. “For the Perfect Day collection, it is the consumer who is driving the technology. We listened to their biggest sleep concerns and hit the drawing board. It wasn’t enough to create a sleeping solution for a better night’s rest; it has to help them feel refreshed and feel better all day long.”Designed with health in mind, the new Perfect Day collection harnesses the latest technology in the industry to tackle today’s most common triggers of sleeping problems that plague people everywhere – from tossing and turning, to the right level of heat, to feeling refreshed the next day.Tossing and turning. The new Perfect Day line is the only mattress in the market that uses Serta’s exclusive Free Flex® innerspring system. Free Flex is an ergonomic “coil within a coil” innerspring that better distributes weight, provides extended support and helps reduce motion transfer, one of the most common complaints among sleeping partners. Layered upon the innerspring system is a higher gauge of KoolComfort™ memory foam with the broadest temperature threshold that quickly responds to each individual’s body heat, creating the right level of pressure reduction and body contouring. The result? A more restful night’s sleep without the disturbances caused by tossing and turning.Battle over the thermostat. Men and women have markedly different preferences when it comes to sleep; this is often dictated by individual health needs and underlying medical conditions. According to the 2006 Guideline Research trend report, sweating is cited as a key cause of having sleeping difficulty. That’s why all Perfect Day mattresses feature Serta’s exclusive KoolComfort™ visco-foam technology. Unlike other foams on the market, this foam features an open-celled structure that is specially designed to better dissipate heat and moisture, giving couples another reason not to fight in bed.Waking up tired. The trend report also states that the most common sleep problem was not feeling refreshed in the morning. To address this, the new Perfect Day Pro-Energy collection is the first of its kind to incorporate new CelliantSleep™ technology in the fibers of the mattress. This body-responsive fiber is commonly used in high-performance athletic clothing and has been clinically shown to increase oxygen levels in the skin leading to better circulation, more energy and muscle recovery. The benefits of the fiber maximize one’s energy for the next day. There are three Pro-Energy models featuring CelliantSleep in the new Perfect Day collection.Fighting allergies. For many who suffer from allergies, the Perfect Day mattress line incorporates Ultra-Fresh® antimicrobial technology. This system minimizes germs and odors creating a hypoallergenic environment that consumers have come to expect. That sinking feeling. Many people sleeping on older mattresses complain of sagging, lumps and little or no support. These problems can disturb sleep and cause soreness and discomfort. The Perfect Day line was built to last. Supported by a patented StabLBase® Triple Beam Foundation to reinforce durability and create extra center support, the Perfect Day line makes sagging mattresses a thing of the past.Exceptional Quality. The Perfect Day by Serta collection was built from the ground up to solve people’s biggest sleeping problems. When unique technologies meet health-focused ingenuity, the result is a line of mattresses designed to help create a rejuvenating sleep environment that is free of disruption, leaving people feeling refreshed, and ready for the next day. Serta is so confident in the quality of its new Perfect Day models that each was tested to two times the industry standard. Therefore, all Perfect Day models are backed by a 20-Year Warranty. The new Perfect Day collection by Serta will be available at selected retailers in spring, 2008. (11.11.05) Serta® and SOFTLY Give Honduran Orphans a Bed of Their Own
Hoffman Estates, Illinois – Nov. 11, 2005 – 400 children living in severely overcrowded orphanages and shelters in Honduras now have beds to sleep in, thanks to a partnership between Serta International and SOFTLY (Securing Our Future Through Loving Youth) International, a children’s service organization.Aguas Ocaña de Maduro, the First Lady of Honduras, announced the gift at a press conference at the presidential quarters in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, in September. Joining her were other Honduras dignitaries, including Sister Maria Rosa Leggol, director of the Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, a nonprofit group that has helped to raise and educate more than 60,000 children in Honduras.“Words cannot express how thankful I am to everyone involved today. I think the faces of the children say it best,” said Maduro. At her side was 12-year-old Jose, who lived on the streets until three years ago, as well as 24 other children who would soon be enjoying the first real bed of their lives.Other speakers included Eloise Vincent, executive director and founder of SOFTLY, Bob Malin, vice president of Serta International and John Mussack, General Manager, Camas Olympia Honduras, Serta’s Central American licensee. “We are living in a time when the entire world is one Community,” noted Malin. “It is in that spirit that Serta International is pleased to donate 400 beds to the children in Honduras who most need them.”Serta donated the mattresses to SOFTLY, which coordinated the project. The nonprofit group gives mattresses, sheets, bed frames and Magic Dream Pillows (pillows with pillowcases decorated by children throughout America) to some of the world’s neediest children in its A Bed For Every Child (ABFEC) program. ABFEC focuses its efforts in Central America, where an estimated one out of every two children sleeps on the ground every night.“The children’s shelters in Tegucigalpa are in desperate need of beds,” said Vincent. “One homeless shelter for 36 girls I visited had a total of three mattresses. This donation will make a huge difference to these children.”“We hope and trust that this gift will help many children sleep well tonight and for many nights to come,” noted Malin. (9.28.05) Serta® Retreat Aims To Help Women Achieve Perfect Day
HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILL. – September 28, 2005 – If you ask them, women today will tell you that there’s an energy crisis in this country – and they’re not referring to the high price of gas. Whether by choice or circumstance, modern women are incredibly busy. On any day, they’re juggling the roles of mother, wife, caregiver, chauffeur and corporate executive. While these busy lifestyles are incredibly rewarding, they exact a price – and that price is energy.Today, more than ever, American women recognize the importance of sleep—as well as the value of a comfortable mattress. Every woman knows that when she wakes feeling refreshed and energized, she is ready to conquer the world. On the other hand, chronically waking up “tired” is a woman’s worst nightmare because the hectic pace of life will go on whether she’s sleep-deprived or not. Inevitably, challenges seem like insurmountable problems when a woman is energy-drained.Women want to feel energized when they wake up in the morning – and not just one morning as a “special treat,” but every morning. They want a reliable source of energy. And if a woman can experience night after night of restorative sleep on her mattress, she sees it as far more than just a piece of furniture. It becomes her “secret source” of serenity and rejuvenation, her trusted roadmap to a better day. With 75 years of experience in making quality mattresses, Serta understands the critical importance of sleep to health and well being—not only in helping women “get through” the day, but in helping them enjoy it. To help women achieve a better day, every day, Serta is introducing a restorative and new uniquely comfortable mattress set designed with women’s needs, health and well-being in mind—the Perfect Day™ Sleep System. But Serta recognizes that while sleep is an essential element, it is only one part of the energy equation that women must solve today. It is on this basis that Serta designed the Energy Triangle—a balance of better rest, better nutrition and better fitness—that leads women not only to greater self-care, but also inevitably to a lively and refreshing experience of a “perfect day.”Serta has invited sleep expert Dr. Joyce Walsleben, women’s health expert Dr. Pamela Peeke and fitness expert Kathy Kaehler to speak at Red Mountain Spa in St. George, Utah to talk about how each element of the Energy Triangle contributes to a rejuvenating, enjoyable and healthy life.Dr. Walsleben, head of Behavioral Sleep Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine’s Sleep Disorders Center and Sleep Medicine Associates of NYC, says the Energy Triangle’s laments are all intertwined. “Most women say they would like to get better rest, but doing so requires them to consider their nutrition and exercise regimens,” she points out.“Exercise and diet can improve your sleep. And, if one piece of the puzzle is missing, you’re not doing all you can to achieve a perfect day.”Better rest, better nutrition and better fitness are the classic building blocks of a perfect day. And together, the three components contribute to a woman’s total health: vitality, clarity, energy and physical and mental well-being. The Energy Triangle comes alive with the help of Dr. Walsleben, Dr. Peeke and Kaehler, each a well-known expert in her respective field. They recommend practical, energizing steps that women can take in the realms of rest, nutrition and fitness to enhance and expand the ways they care for themselves.During this workshop, Walsleben, Peeke and Kaehler will address a number of significant questions related to the three key areas of the Energy Triangle. Here is an example:- What happens when women don’t get enough sleep – or a good quality of sleep?Their moods, immune systems and weight are often affected. Sleep deprived subjects complain of increased tension, confusion and worry–and they don’t do as well in performance tests as people who have experienced a good night’s sleep. In addition, sleep loss can trick the body into believing it is hungry when it is not. Research shows an association between self-reported sleep duration and Body Mass Index (BMI), resulting in a higher BMI for less sleep.
- What can women do to make sure their nutritional intake will lead to better rest?Stress causes many women to overeat, which can lead to a poor night’s rest. By learning the value of the quality, quantity and frequency of what they eat, women will not only to achieve proper nutrition, but great rest.
- How can women’s exercise routines affect their sleep?Being active can help tire women and get them ready for rest. Aside from the regular health benefits, consistent exercise helps women sleep longer and more deeply.

(7.25.05) Serta® Launches Perfect Day® Line, Tailor-made for Women with
Busy Lifestyles
Hoffman Estates, Illinois (July 25, 2005) With lifestyles busier than ever, American women are relying on a good night’s sleep to get more energy, according to a recent study commissioned by Serta. This insight serves as the inspiration for Serta’s beautiful new Perfect Day™ Sleep System and its name: Perfect Day. Serta has designed this upscale line to give women a feeling of rejuvenation when they wake up in the morning, and a renewed sense of energy that lasts throughout the day. This unique new line-up brings together a unique combination of features and benefits tailor-made to give women a renewing sleep experience, including the first-ever integration of three popular mattress technologies: foam, innerspring and air. Serta will launch the new line at the World Market Center during the Las Vegas Market, the week of July 24th.To find out what busy women want from their mattresses, Serta partnered with two top U.S. firms specializing in gender marketing and communications. Together they conducted an intensive research study and analysis of women willing to invest $1,500 or more in their mattress set. The findings of the investigation resulted in a rich repository of information and insights.“We focused our research on women since they are almost always the decision makers when it comes to mattress purchases,” said Angela Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Serta International. “By gaining a better appreciation and deeper understanding of the women who are in the market for an upscale mattress, we have been able to design and market a line exclusively for them,” noted Kelly.According to Kelly, the research findings of the study influenced Serta’s choices on every aspect of the launch — from the name, Perfect Day, to the elegant embroidery work and “body cradling” feel of the mattress set, to the supporting marketing campaign. Serta has designed all its features to enhance the quality of a woman’s sleeping experience. For example:- Temperature control with KoolComfort™–Exclusive to Serta, this new Visco foam eliminates the heat typically associated with Visco mattresses and provides a cool, comfortable sleeping experience. KoolComfort keeps its durability throughout the life of the mattress.
- Comfort control with Air Rest™–Since comfort is an individual matter, sleepers may want to change the feel of their beds from one night to the next. Now they can. Serta’s unique air suspension system helps sleepers and their partners find their ideal comfort preferences, independently of each another.
- Proper body alignment with Free Flex® Innerspring–Zones of single and double rows of coils mirror the shape of the human body, ensuring proper spinal alignment. This advanced innerspring works by enabling the bed to conform to and support the body, rather than forcing the body to conform to the bed. (It is so durable that a trailer truck can roll over it, and the springs bounce right back.)
- Embroidered Borders–According to gender research studies, women tend to be more discriminating shoppers than men. In selecting their mattresses, women want beauty as well as comfort. Designer-created embroidered borders give the Perfect Day Collection an exquisite appearance and a rich texture.
- People who toss and turn all night will not wake up feeling refreshed–no matter how much they like their mattress. Serta’s patented Comfort Quilt® design helps to improve circulation, which reduces tossing and turning, and provides gentle cushioning for the body. Building on this design, Serta positions five zones for better comfort and support, where the body needs them the most.
- Greater peace of mind translates into better sleep. Serta’s flame-resistant FireBlocker® protection provides sleepers with a safer bedroom environment, giving them more time to get themselves and their family out safely in case of a bedroom fire. Made from a proprietary blend of fibers, FireBlocker works by minimizing the impact of a fire on the mattress and resisting its spread into the mattress. Serta is the first and only national brand to provide flame-resistance protection in all its mattresses throughout the U.S.
- Over time, sitting on the edge of most beds causes it to break down and the mattress to sag. Serta has added a durable new edge support to all of its Perfect Day models that provides firm sleeping and seating support at the edge, as well as superior product tailoring.
- No matter how comfortable a mattress set may seem at first, it must maintain this comfort feel over the long run to earn a reputation for quality, especially with perceptive women shoppers. Serta constructed its StabL-Base® Triple Beam foundation to maintain the support and comfort of the Perfect Day set year after year. Its unique V-shaped construction isolates the impact of partner movement, reduces mattress sway and provides stable support of the entire mattress all the way to the edge.

(1.21.05) Serta® Makes Safer Mattresses for Consumers
Only Major Company To Make All Its Bedding Open-Flame ResistantHoffman Estates, Illinois (January 21, 2005) Serta formally announced today that all its new mattresses will give consumers a critical measure of safety in case of a bedroom fire with its open-flame resistance FireBlocker® system. Serta is the first and only major brand to make all of its bedding open-flame resistant in the U.S. The company began its rollout of FireBlocker mattresses in December 2003, more than one year before a regulation mandating open-flame resistance went into effect in California on January 1, 2005.To honor its commitment to consumer safety, Serta placed a full page ad in a prominent position in the first section of USA Today’s January 21st issue. The ad carries a powerful “Consumer Advisory” headline superimposed over a picture of Serta’s popular Counting Sheep icon. The message reads, in part, “More than 700 people in the United States die in bedroom fires each year. Effective January 21, 2005, Serta became the only major mattress manufacturer to include open flame retardant materials in the production of all Serta bedding nationwide.”The ad then emphasizes the difference between Serta and its competitors, “Not Sealy, not Simmons… only Serta.”“By the end of last year most Serta’s retailers carried FireBlocker lines,” said Robert Sherman, president of Serta International. “Now the production process is complete.”Serta’s FireBlocker® system works by isolating the impact of a fire on the mattress and slowing its spread. This provides someone with critical time to escape and call for help. Serta’s FireBlocker technology is a proprietary system of natural and synthetic fibers in the outer layers of the mattress and box spring, containing no harmful chemicals.“We recognize that time is life in a bedroom fire, and that is the basis for Serta’s FireBlocker protection,” noted Sherman. “Serta’s safer mattresses can help save lives now, and that is important to us. If you consider that one or two people die in a bedroom fire every day, many of whom are children, we are not willing to wait until federal regulations are mandatory before offering safer mattresses to consumers. I hope that our actions encourage other companies to follow our lead. In the meantime, we are committed to giving consumers a safer bedroom environment now.”Over the last four years, Serta has conducted performance tests for its FireBlocker technology at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), and the results are UL-confirmed. These tests simulate the impact of a comforter and pillow fire on a mattress, and were developed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) and the California Bureau of Home Furnishings. Serta FireBlocker mattresses pass the tests and meet the California standard, which is the most stringent in the country. For more information, please Contact Us. -
(7.03.03) Counting Sheep Scheme To Win Back Clients In Serta’s® New
TV Commercials
ITASCA, ILLINOIS – JULY 3, 2003 The Counting Sheep have concocted some ingenious schemes to win back their clients in a new series of national and retail TV and radio commercials by Serta. As the latest installments in its award-winning advertising campaign, Serta is launching two new television commercials, "Image" and "Couch," for both network and retailer use. The two 30-second network spots will premiere the week of July 7th, and run through the end of Serta’s 2003 TV schedule.Serta is launching the commercials as part of its multi-million dollar 2003 media campaign that will reach nearly all U.S. adults. The retail versions of "Image" and "Couch" offer Serta dealers the opportunity to leverage the popularity and recognition of the Counting Sheep and the Serta brand. The two spots show that the Counting Sheep are continually foiled – no matter what devious plot they hatch – by the enormous comfort that consumers feel when sleeping on a Serta mattress. Each humorous confrontation pits the Counting Sheep against Serta products, which are "So Comfortable, You’ll Feel the Difference the Moment You Lie Down."In the national network spot "Image," the desperate Counting Sheep take the advice of an image consultant who tells them how to compete against Serta’s comfortable mattresses that "get consumers to sleep fast." A national 15-second version of "Image" will begin airing later in the third quarter. "Image" will be available to retailers in three formats (:25/:05, :20/:10 and :15/:15).COUNTING SHEEP SCHEME IN SERTA’S NEW TV COMMERCIALS, ADD ONEIn the national network spot “Couch,” the Counting Sheep resort to sabotage to force an ex-client of theirs to leave his comfortable new Serta mattress and use their services instead – if only for a night. “Couch” will be available for retailers to tag in a :25/:05 format. "The humor of these commercials underscores the message that no matter what the Counting Sheep do, they can’t effectively compete against the comfort of Serta mattresses," said Susan Ebaugh, Serta’s Chief Brand Officer. "Consumers tell us that they eagerly await our new commercials to find out just what the Counting Sheep will try next to keep people from buying, or sleeping on, comfortable new Serta mattresses."In the three short years since we launched the Serta Counting Sheep campaign, it has become one of the most popular and powerful campaigns in the country," Ebaugh noted. "Research shows that Americans enjoy the Counting Sheep, recall the commercials and remember the Serta brand name as well."In its April 21, 2003, issue, Advertising Age recognized Serta’s Counting Sheep TV commercial "Penalty" (:30) as one of the most effective new ads in the nation. Basing its rankings on more than 2.6 million surveys of TV viewers, Ad Age measured the ability of TV viewers to recall, within 24 hours, the ad as well as the brand they saw during the normal course of TV viewing. In June 2002, the advertising industry recognized Serta’s brand-building campaign by awarding a highly prestigious gold EFFIE to Serta and its advertising agency, Doner. The EFFIE awards recognize the most effective and creative advertising campaigns in the nation."Consumers have become fans of our Counting Sheep campaign and the inherent comfort message associated with Serta," said Ebaugh. "As a result, awareness of the Serta brand is stronger than ever."This year’s schedule features network leaders like ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, as well as most of the top-rated cable stations: Comedy Central, Discovery, Lifetime, Nick at Nite, TBS, TNT, TV Land, USA and VH1Highlights of the third quarter schedule include late-night sponsorship of both Jay Leno (The Tonight Show) and David Letterman (The Late Show). In the second spot, "Moving In," the Counting Sheep gather in the home of another satisfied Serta mattress owner and ask if they can move in because they’re unable to support themselves – thanks to Serta.
